Yet another example of Western cultural post-modernism and the self-refuting deficiency of such intolerant “tolerance” organizations as homosexual activist group Intolerance Free Weyburn which opposed the entrance of conservative activist Peter LaBarbera into Canada for fear his “anti-gay” speeches would incite hate in the country. In fact, according to Christian News they partially succeeded to bar Mr. LaBarbera from entering Canada by pressuring The Canadian Border Services agency and insisting that his activities in the country would lead to hate and thus the violation of hate-crime laws. What is so disturbing about the story is how easily, a small seemingly insignificant homegrown network like Intolerance Free Weyburn was allowed to lobby The Canadian Border Services to prohibit free speech. Furthermore, on the simple request based on the fact that IFW did not agree with LaBarbera’s message, the agency caved to political correctness pressure and LaBarbera’s freedoms were violated and his views were ironically not tolerated at all; so much for being “intolerance free.” In fact, Mr. LaBarbera’s possession were confiscated, his personal possessions were searched, his computer was also searched and his time was completely wasted all in the name of preserving tolerance and avoiding what some deemed to be hate-inducing speech. In truth, this is simply the “intolerance of tolerance.”
This is nothing else but the symptoms of a sick society that is drowning in an ocean of postmodernism and sinking quickly in the quagmire of relativism.
As Christians and citizens of this great country, we face an ever-increasing hostility from culture against Christian truth. Christianity is a truth religion. Jesus said, “you will know the truth and the truth will set you free” (John 8.32). The lines of what culture considers “tolerant” and what Scripture considers non-negotiable Christian convictions of truth are becoming increasingly polarized, antagonistic and antithetical. When we consider the situation with Peter LaBarbera, we quickly come to realize the deep hypocrisy of this age of self-proclaimed “tolerance” proponents. In reality there is no tolerance at all- at least not for those who object to the cultural evolution of moral norms, standards, and practices. For this reason, Biblical Christianity will always remain at odds with any culture that is determined to erase transcendent, especially theistically-based, ethics from the societal consciousness. As D.A. Carson rightly suggests, these kinds
of perspectives “no longer deserve a place at the table.” In his book, The Intolerance of Tolerance, D.A. Carson wisely points out the total bankruptcy of 21st century “tolerance” talk:
“Neither the old tolerance nor the new is an intellectual position; rather, each is a social response. The old tolerance is the willingness to put up with, allow, or endure people and ideas with whom we disagree; in its purest form, the new tolerance is the social commitment to treat all ideas and people as equally right, save for those people who disagree with this view of tolerance. Advocates of the new tolerance sacrifice wisdom and principle in support of just one supreme good: upholding their view of tolerance. So those who uphold and practice the older tolerance, enmeshed as they inevitably are in some value system, are written off as intolerant. Thus banished, they no longer deserve a place at the table.” (D.A. Carson, The Intolerance of Tolerance, (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2012) 98).
Carson goes on to say:
“Far form bringing peace, the new tolerance is progressively becoming more intolerant, fostering moral myopia, proving unable to engage in serous and competent discussion about truth, letting personal and social evils fester, and remaining blind to the political and international perceptions of our tolerant cultural profile.” (Ibid, 139).
This “profile” is precisely what is at stake, this is the battle line, as Western civilization struggles to define this “profile”, it is our duty as believers to stay abreast with how we are to respond to this fast-pace culture on the road to who but God knows where for it seems to be moving there very quickly.
