A pastor once described this book as “iron to the bones of the soul”, and so it is. The book is a masterpiece of theology. Murray takes the reader through some of the most profound theological terrain in Scripture with a lucid straightforward approach that has no rivals. Murray writes with the mind of the master teacher that he was and with the clarity and accessibility so that those of us who are not scholars can understand what Scripture teaches regarding the nature of Salvation. Murray shows not only what salvation is and how it works, but why it is necessary and how God meets His own demands in the atoning work of Jesus Christ.
Perhaps one of the most penetrating sections of the book is how Murray attaches God’s redemption with God’s attributes. Particularly helpful is how God’s “sovereign love” is at the base root of God’s redemption. Murray said:
It is necessary to underline this concept of sovereign love. Truly God is love. Love is not something adventitious; it is not something that God may choose to be or choose not to be. He is love, and that necessarily, inherently, and eternally. As God is spirit, as he is light, so he is love. Yet it belongs to the very essence of electing love to recognize that it is not inherently necessary to that love which God necessarily and eternally is that he should set such love as issues in redemption and adoption upon utterly undesirable and hell- deserving objects. It was of the free and sovereign good pleasure of his will, a good pleasure that emanated from the depths of his own goodness, that he chose a people to be heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ. The reason resides wholly in himself and proceeds from determinations that are peculiarly his as the “I am that I am.” The atonement does not win or constrain the love of God. The love of God constrains to the atonement as the means of accomplishing love’s determinate purpose. (p.10).
Rooted in the love of God’s sovereign will, redemption is applied for God’s own purposes i.e. to redeem a people for His own possession so that they might be to the praise of His glorious grace (Eph. 1.3-14). I have read this book, some sections over and over again I look forward to seeing its many sanctifying effects in the minds and lives of Heritage Grace members.
