Go learn what this means: Contra Mundum (against the world). These were the words used by Athanasius when he sought to confront the errors of Arianism which was sweeping the Roman Empire under Constantine. Today we have another cause in which we find ourselves in an Athanasius challenge only this time it does not come at the hands of heretics per se but by the purveyors of the new post-modern, post-Evangelical, post-Christian culture in which we live. The challenge is not just that folks disagree with what Scripture teaches regarding sexuality; it’s that they refuse to allow the Christian conscience to flourish alongside their post-Christian sentiments. Furthermore, on this issue, biblical Christianity no longer has the old Conservative political structure protecting its worldview with many self-identifying “conservatives” rejecting the truth at this crucial point. This means exposure. Exposure to the fact that there are several pockets of Evangelicalism still left that believe in the Bible. Liberalism has not stripped everything from everybody just those who did not have historic Christian conviction in the first place. But those who have succumb to liberalism are well known. The mainstream liberal denominations are not only known but crumbling. However, Biblical Christianity is not. But this means that we are also easy targets of the leftist machine that seems to be crushing everything in its path. We are exposed for believing that Scripture alone is the final authority for man’s faith and practice, that we obey God rather than man, that we will preach a gospel of repentance from dead works including homosexuality, that we reject the spirit of the age, and that we will not run the in same excess of dissipation with everyone else; but being exposed of these things will now begin to carry a cost that we have long taken for granted. Persecution has not been part of the American Evangelical experience and in that sense American Christianity has been an anomaly in church history. But that anomaly seems to be fading and persecution seems inevitable now.
Our calling? Contra Mundum! Our calling is the same as Athanasius’ was— we are called to be contrary to the world’s error with all of its ethical, moral, philosophical, political and spiritual commitments that demands that we too run a course that is contrary to the world, regardless of how large the majority becomes. We are not called to make Christianity appealing, likeable, reasonable, traditional or new; we are called to carry out Gods’ imperial orders— a message of pardon before the great and terrible day of the Lord. Man can either repent, believe, and be forgiven or rebel, refuse and be destroyed. It is the simple message of the word – the gospel that will cause many to stumble. Make no mistake about it, a great destructive evil has been unleashed on America and its corrosive effects will divide neighbors, families, churches, spouses and friends. No one will escape the worldview commitments that homosexuality will demand of each one of us; there simply is no neutral ground, you are either for Him or against Him and if you are for Him than be prepared to be Contra Mundum.
